Nose surgery is the procedure that enables a correction
of the defects in the shape or dimension of the nose. When
other than a cosmetic defect there are also breathing problems,
SETTOPLASTY septum surgery is performed in the same section,
combining the correction of the functional defect and cosmetic
remodeling through a rhino-septum surgical procedure.
Two weeks before the operation all medicines containing
acetylsalicylic acid
(eg. Aspirin, Cemerit, Vivin C, etc..) and anti-inflammatories
must be suspended. The main blood tests are required, the
COAGULATION TEST, electrocardiogram, and chest X-rays.
Photographic documentation of at least four perspectives
(two profiles, front and from below)
There does not exist a standard nose for every face. The
planned correction must be suitable to the face and in
proportion to it. The new profile must consider the patients
desires, but above all the anatomical structure and dimensions
of the forehead and chin (PROFILOPLASTY)
The surgery plan is based on direct observation and graphic
changes performed directly on printed photographic documentation
or by computer programs
This enables the surgeon to evaluate the correction and
the main aspects of it, while the patient can evaluate
the hypothesis based on real corrective possibilities.
Another important aspect in the pre-operation evaluation
is the skin thickness, above all on the top of the nose.
A thick skin in this area does not permit a thin tip, even
if desired by patient or surgeon.
The surgery is performed under general anesthesia and a
stay in hospital for at least 24 hours (48-72 in case of
RHINO-SEPTUMPLASTY) is advised.
The incisions are inside the nostrils and consequently
there are no visible scars. In some cases (for example
Secondary Rhinoplasty) an external incision at the level
of the COLUMELLA (the part of the nose that borders the
lips) is preferred to obtain a better vision of the parts
to be reduced/modified.
In the case of particularly thick or long nostrils, external
incisions hardly visible, must be performed in addition
to those described above.
According to the nose shape, first the bone section is
reduced and then the remodeling of the nose tip is performed,
or vice versa. In cases of INSELLATI? CONCAVE? noses, an ìincreasingî Rhinoplasty
is performed, and the defect is filled with a bone graft
or equivalent bone material, or cartilage obtained from
the septum or the ear. The tamponamento of the nostrils,
the immobilization with plasters and plakets or plaster
concludes the operation.
In the first few days the nose is swollen, which could
affect the eyelids. The bruising disappears after 8-10
days. Complete use can begin after around 10 days. If there
are no external incisions it is not necessary to remove
the suture. After removing the bandages the swelling reduces
gradually, starting from the top parts and slowly until
the tip of the nose that can take up to six months or more
to take on the definitive look.
The estimate of each intervention is carried out only
after careful clinical assessment of the case following the
Specialized visit.
